Artistic representation for AI place in the classroom being studied by local scholar

Santiago Luaces is in the process of earning a doctorate in education. He has been the Coordinator of Scholarly Innovation for five years. Luaces graduated from FGCU in 2009 and has been a student or an employee since.

AI Use in the Classroom

FGCU’s policy on AI use in the classroom is multifaceted and designed to ensure that students, faculty, and staff are aware of the potential risks and benefits of using artificial intelligence in educational settings.

  • Using AI to cheat on assignments or exams
  • Creating and distributing AI-generated content without proper attribution
  • Using AI to impersonate others or engage in harassment
  • Failing to disclose the use of AI in academic work
  • Academic Integrity and AI

The use of AI in academic work raises important questions about academic integrity and the role of technology in the learning process.

The survey was sent to 200 students and received 150 responses.

  • Lack of familiarity with the technology
  • Concerns about the impact on critical thinking skills
  • Perceived lack of effectiveness
  • The Importance of Faculty Adaptation

Luaces emphasized the need for faculty to adapt to the changing landscape of AI in education. Faculty need to be able to effectively integrate AI tools into their teaching practices and be able to assess student learning outcomes.

The goal is to make them more aware of their surroundings and the impact of their daily choices on the environment. Luaces and his team aim to study and analyze data to better understand how FGCU’s energy consumption and waste management practices are currently being implemented and to provide recommendations for improvement. The main objectives of the study include: 1) to identify the most effective methods of reducing energy consumption, 2) to analyze the current waste management practices and identify areas for improvement, and 3) to develop a comprehensive sustainability plan that takes into account the findings of the study.
